Updates from Auburn

So it's been a while since I've blogged, but I figured the day before I go on overnight emergency again is as good a time as any...Lots of things have been going on. As Jim already mentioned, I have submitted my final rankings for surgery residencies.  It's just a few more weeks (I'm counting down the days 'till March 5th) until we know where we are going to live for the next three years (unless I don't match anywhere, but that's a whole different scenario that I don't really want to think about right now). I'll post a little blog message as soon as I know something to keep everyone updated :)

Other than that, work has been great. Since coming back from the Christmas trip to Germany, I've been on soft tissue surgery and oncology (which also involves a lot of surgery), and it has been a good learning experience. The Kid likes to help me study at night, and she also has a keen interest in surgery, as you can see here...

Speaking of The Kid, she got an echocardiogram (ultrasound of her heart) on Friday. A few weeks after we found her in New Orleans I echoed her for fun when I was on the cardiology rotation at LSU. At that time, we discovered that she has dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease that is very rare in cats, and is caused by a deficiency of a specific amino acid in the diet (we attributed her disease to the fact that she probably didn't eat anything for about 2 months after Hurricane Katrina). I echoed her again before we left for Auburn, and we really saw no improvement (I had put her on a good cat food, and was supplementing her with taurine at that time). Friday's echo appeared much better than the two before. Her heart is contracting better, and her heart chambers are not enlarged. Go The Kid!

That's it for now...
